Swingweight and Shaft Weight

I require my clubs 1.5″ over std and like a D5 swingweight and mid-size grips with 2 additional wraps. Will having a lighter shaft bring the swingweight down or will I need to put additional weight in the butt? This issue has not been a problem before as my Pings and Mizuno at 1.5″ longer and a mid size grip come out to D5, but seem to be a huge issue with TaylorMade and their R9 TP. Any advice will help.

Ian,

Without knowing the weight of the heads, it is impossible to say. Lighter shafts will help. For every @8 gram reduction in shaft weight, swingweight goes down a point. For every 1/2 additional length swingweight goes up a point.

Ping G15 Driver Bending

Jeff, I was given a Ping G15 driver for Father’s Day and would like to know if the face can be bent slightly closed. I know the i15 can due to longer hosel but was wondering if you had knowledge of the G15.
Mike, Wichita, Kansas, USA

Mike,

Sorry, the G15 driver can’t be bent.

Jeff

Shaft Fitting

Hello, I am currently playing Ping S59’s with Hogan Apex 4 shafts (older versions-circa 1992). The original zz65 shafts in them were bent at hosel. Probably why I got them so cheap. Anyway I put the Apex 4 shafts in them and they hit the ball very straight, I have no problem with pull or pushes at all, but I have a distance problem with these shafts. About 10 yards shorter than all of the other irons I have ever played. What would be a good recommendation replacement shaft to gain my distance back with out spraying them all over the place if I went with a regular shaft? I like the straightness of the Apex 4’s but not the distance. Maybe KB’s, Nippons, Also like the S59 heads, would like to stick with them if I can find a shaft to fit just right for my swing speed (83 to 92 mph). Thanks :)

Shay,

Without seeing you swing, it is impossible to say. But, I can say, many players really like the feel and flight of the KB shafts. Find a fitter who has demos of all of the shafts you seem interested in and test them out. Look for a Ping fitting van demo near you as well as they will have screw on shafts that will help you decide as well.

Jeff

Frequency Study

Is there a published study comparing a flat line (one number) frequency curve to a sloped frequency curve as it relates to the dispersion pattern for struck golf balls. I am of course assuming that the study would match a 90 mph shaft to a 90 mph Iron Byron swing.
W Patrick, Castle Rock, Colorado, USA

W Patrick,

There is no known study that I know of.

Ping i3 Irons

I have a set of 10 year old Ping i3 womens irons. I would like to know if it would be an advantage to replace the shafts. They feel a little stiff for me.
Joan, Silver Springs, Maryland, USA

Joan,

I might look to a more modern version of the Pings. You could reshaft them, but it might be almost the same cost to get a new set.

Jeff
